What is COFFINS?

These symbols may or may not be made for popular consumption. Contained within the scope of COFFINS is an expansion and coalescence of a range of personal themes and an open dialog about how we choose to represent ourselves. How do you organize meaning in your life through attachments to specific symbols? Does it even matter in the end? 

COFFINS is a collection of generative artworks created by experimental indie artist and designer Gifdead. It’s the culmination of many themes and storylines developed from 15 years of innovating as a creative pioneer at the intersection of art and technology.

Conceptually, COFFINS presents original interpretations of a famous symbol of the macabre, inviting viewers to re-evaluate and perhaps challenge their relationship with a beautiful death. It simultaneously celebrates the things that make us each non-fungible while accepting the redundant, manufactured realities that box us in.

Meet the Artist - Gifdead

Gifdead evolves across a lifetime of creative disciplines, developing an eclectic palette of inspirations and honing them into a unique style.

The original coffin concept design originated with his moniker while exploring audio engineering and music production in 2016-2017. Out of this spun an exploration of various coffin motifs and expressions, including a custom hat label called Gifdead Couture that prototyped and manufactured a series of custom snapbacks, each design limited to an edition of 100.

Gifdead joined the digital renaissance as a creative producer in January 2021 via Clubhouse and has collaborated with a long list of well-known artists in the space. This project is a direct effect of those explorations mixed with recent experiences as a builder in web3.

COFFINS is the first NFT project to launch featuring his art front and center. It is the amalgamation of a life-long obsession with disruptive technology and the creative process coming to fruition.

Discover the Art

COFFINS draws from a deep reservoir of life experiences and interests, combining them into a multi-modal work of interactive digital art using generative NFTs as the medium. By minting one, the collector generates an original coffin in real time that becomes a part of their imprint on humanity.

Juxtaposing the chosen pieces in this context opens up the possibility that a coffin may represent many things. While commonly understood as a symbol of death, one can be viewed as much more. As a life lived, full of complexity, emotion, dreams, and meaningful connections. Or perhaps as a portal into another parallel. Ancient civilizations decorated stone sarcophaguses with ornate masonry and valuable objects, imbuing their heroes with glory beyond mortality.

COFFINS examines the relationships between the reductive nature of humanity, our desire to adorn our lives with symbols, how specific objects inherit meaning, and the concept of completion.
